What a blessing this past week was. For work/30th b-day celebrations, all three of us boarded the plane and headed to Vegas. Matt enjoyed the Expo, Christy enjoyed unexpected upgrades making us feel at times as if we were the only ones at the hotel, and Caleb enjoyed naps under the palm trees and his first dunk all the way under the water with an impromptu swimming lesson from the lifeguard. Despite a two hour time change, Caleb enjoyed himself as we played it completely by his schedule. This is the first vacation where we didn't have the days planned...a very different experience for us planners. They took one look at him at check-in and sent up all kinds of goodies. He was especially pleased with his teddy bear.
Caleb is increasingly aware of action all around him. He stared and laughed with excitement at the aquariums in the dolphin habitat and shark reef. He was such a hit at the pool and we seemed to meet everyone there. Before then, I didn't realize to what extent a baby connects people and opens the doors to conversation. In fact, one day as Caleb was loaded in the stroller and we were about to leave, we were met by the lady coming to clean our room. Of course she oooed over Caleb and then I reciprocated by asking if she had children. In just a few moments, I went from a polite greeting to praying for her 17 year old daughter who was gone when she awoke this morning. Without Caleb, I probably would have missed out on this conversation with her.
