Look Who's Batting 30

We enjoyed more birthday celebrations. Monday we celebrated Matt's birthday with dinner at Jose's and a Natural's game. Thank you to all that came!Pictures of Daddy were displayed. Without the aged patina, it looked like more pictures of Caleb.Caleb surprised Daddy with a new book to read together. Caleb tried to love the book "through and through" and showed off his new talent of page turning.

New York

We enjoyed a quick weekend trip to New York. This was a special weekend to remember Grandma Root and there sure was a large group of family gathered. All weekend we heard...this is exactly what Grandma would have loved, wanted, etc. It was a weekend to slow down on the farm, enjoy family scattered across the globe, and recognize the wonderful legacy she left. The weather was perfect, and Caleb couldn't take his eyes off the sparklers or the "big honkin' yellow tractor" which he got to drive with Uncle Bob. He met lots of new family and saw many others for a second time. We look forward to our next trip and ask the Lord to bless our family until we meet again.

7 Months

I say every month "this is the best age" and every month I am correct. We are enjoying summertime. If there is any mentioning of Fall, football season, etc. my reply is to not wish away a single day of summer. I wish I could throw on the brakes a little more but will enjoy each day in the meantime.

Caleb isn't fond of food however as the doctor advised we are trying to get him used to swallowing with a spoon. Don't let the smile fool you. He wanted nothing to do with food, was only happy to have the eating experience over and triumphed over winning the spoon contest. We've tried every variable however one factor remains the same...he could care less. We haven't figured out why people get excited over introducing food. If I thought Caleb would magically wake up one day and want regular food I would probably wait until that day.

We continue to play with friends and have added a little pool to the back which might as well be the Four Seasons to him.

A Not-So-Vegas Vacation

What a blessing this past week was. For work/30th b-day celebrations, all three of us boarded the plane and headed to Vegas. Matt enjoyed the Expo, Christy enjoyed unexpected upgrades making us feel at times as if we were the only ones at the hotel, and Caleb enjoyed naps under the palm trees and his first dunk all the way under the water with an impromptu swimming lesson from the lifeguard. Despite a two hour time change, Caleb enjoyed himself as we played it completely by his schedule. This is the first vacation where we didn't have the days planned...a very different experience for us planners. They took one look at him at check-in and sent up all kinds of goodies. He was especially pleased with his teddy bear.
Caleb is increasingly aware of action all around him. He stared and laughed with excitement at the aquariums in the dolphin habitat and shark reef. He was such a hit at the pool and we seemed to meet everyone there. Before then, I didn't realize to what extent a baby connects people and opens the doors to conversation. In fact, one day as Caleb was loaded in the stroller and we were about to leave, we were met by the lady coming to clean our room. Of course she oooed over Caleb and then I reciprocated by asking if she had children. In just a few moments, I went from a polite greeting to praying for her 17 year old daughter who was gone when she awoke this morning. Without Caleb, I probably would have missed out on this conversation with her.

Happy Early Father's Day

Because we won't be home for Father's Day, we celebrated a little early. This tradition goes back to the dating days when we had to celebrate special occasions on the weekends and a weekend was always a special occasion as we lived 5 hours apart. After DADDY read from his new book, Baron ended with a spontaneous serenade.

Summers always fly by way too fast. I knew this one would be especially fast, so I'm applying the advice of what my mom told me growing up - to make the very most and not waste a single day. So far we've painted footprints on pottery, visited a new park, swam, enjoyed a play date with our church friends, posed for our six month photo shoot, tried rice cereal and a sippy cup (not crazy about either) and enjoyed a wonderful weekend of Grandparents. We've had more Boppy-babbling conversations, exhausting jumps in the jumperoo, development of a new game of peek-a-boo through the slats of the crib and attempted scooting during tummy time. We also did one thing we've meant to do the past five years but have never found time. We have blueberry farm just down the street and pass by it on a daily basis. This year, instead of stopping to smell the roses, Caleb has helped us to slow down enough to stop and pick up blueberries. It's amazing how God uses such a little child to help put life in perspective...of course He also did this with His own son!
